In 2021, the Livestock Auctioneers’ Association (LAA) launched the MartSafe Training Programme as part of a wider initiative to promote health and safety within the livestock market.

The initiative supports LAA members by providing bespoke health and safety guidance and a training programme, designed to support existing in-house training and monitoring. The training is designed for all staff within the livestock market and supports businesses to meet legislative and assurance standards, whilst also proving a valuable tool in promoting a safe and positive workplace culture. 

Delivered in-person in the livestock market by an LAA trainer, through a series of practical, interactive and engaging exercises, the training provides specialist advice and training on the key responsibilities within the livestock market over 4 core training modules: Animal Behaviour, Safe Handling, People Behaviour and Animal Welfare. 

Each year a new curriculum is released, building on the core principles established in the MartSafe 1.0 Training Programme, providing a progression route for businesses, supporting participant engagement. 

Additional modules have covered topics including mental health awareness – partnering with the DPJ Foundation and the ‘Farming Stronger for Longer’ campaign from Field Nurse, physical wellbeing, disease prevention, biosecurity, animal activism and the management of escaped livestock. 

In addition, the training is supported by an online training portal to catch up staff who miss an in-person training session, or to support new starters in the business. 

Since its launch in 2021, the training has been delivered at more than 180 sessions involving over 4,000 participants to a total of 81 livestock markets across the UK and Ireland. 

The MartSafe Training Programme has been met with high praise from across industry, and government representatives, and is now a recognised training route for livestock markets.
