Engaging with the next generation of farmers and newcomers to the industry is one of the key new functions of the Livestock Auctioneers’ Association’s (LAA) Next Generation Group, as the group re-launched with a new format virtual meeting, addressing how to encourage greater communication and demonstrate the vital role of the livestock auction mart within the wider rural community.
The LAA Next Generation Group was established to represent younger auctioneers and fieldsmen working in livestock markets, as well as to connect with the younger generation of livestock farmers.
Some 27 members of the group joined chairman Russell Steer and vice-chair Greg Christopher as they hosted an online event featuring a presentation from guest speaker Amy Eggleston, more widely known through her social media persona @thedairydaughter, in which she gave pointers and advice on using social media to engage with younger farmers and others within the rural community.
“We have an important role to play in informing the next generation of farmer, as well as new entrants to farming, of this industry’s important role in the food supply chain,” explains Mr Steer.
“We have a platform from where we can help to encourage greater discussion and understanding of how the live sales ring can help support a robust and sustainable farming industry, and importantly we can demonstrate the high animal welfare standards associated within our member businesses, as well as the wider UK livestock sector,” he says.
Mr Christopher adds, “The Next Generation Group is well placed to connect with the younger generation of farmer, be it through social media or other technological means.”
The group meeting concluded with an industry update from LAA executive secretary Chris Dodds and development officer Zanna Dennis, followed by an industry discussion with contributions from all participants.
Ms Dennis adds, “We are delighted to have re-launched with this new online format, but very much look forward to the point, when ease of restrictions allow, that we can meet in person again. Our next even is scheduled to coincide with the Thame Summer Sheep Fair on 5th August.”
