LAA announce appointment of Alastair Brown to help drive future direction for the association

The Livestock Auctioneers’ Association (LAA) has appointed Alastair Brown to the newly created position of Policy & Strategy Officer, in a move to secure longevity and support the future direction of the trade body, as it continues to represent the livestock production sector.

Mr Brown, a dairy farmer’s son originally from Cheshire, starts his new role on 1 July 2025, after a decade as Senior Auctioneer and Head of Auctions with Bletsoes, managing both Thrapston and Stratford-upon-Avon livestock markets over this period.

The new role has been conceived to further expand the lobbying powers and define the long-term strategic direction of the LAA, as it drives exciting new developments to support the future of a vibrant and successful livestock production sector.

The move will also help future-proof the influential representative trade association, building on the work that has seen the LAA help the industry navigate major challenges, including the global pandemic and Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks, while at the same time introducing new training and safety initiatives, alongside the new data-driven Market Prices platform.

The LAA has also taken leadership in bringing industry together, taking the lead on key initiatives to support the UK food and farming industry, including the formation of the Livestock Chain Advisory Group.

Mr Brown’s appointment represents the next step in defining, developing and leading on the LAA’s future strategies, representing the interests of livestock markets and farmers, particularly in negotiations with Defra and Welsh Government.

Having previously served as LAA Chairman for a two-year term of office, from 2022 before handing over to current Chair Keith Davies in November 2024, Mr Brown played a pivotal role during his tenure, not least overseeing the launch of the Market Prices platform, and the continued rollout of the MartSafe training programme.

Starting his auctioneering career back in 1989 as a clerk, Mr Brown has also had a seat on the LAA National Council since 2010, becoming increasingly involved first-hand with the policy and strategic direction of the association.

This new role will see him continue to deliver in that sphere, supporting and expanding on the work of LAA Executive Secretary Chris Dodds.

“I am very excited to play an integral role in what is an important move forward for the LAA. We have seen a tremendous amount of change and progression within the association in the last ten years or more, in terms of our remit and how we represent the industry,” says Mr Brown.

“To have the chance to help drive new policies and deliver strategic opportunities, working alongside and under Chris’ direction, is a great honour and challenge I am looking forward to,” he adds.

Mr Brown’s appointment comes fast on the back of the recruitment of Charlotte Green, who joined the LAA in 2024 in the role of Business Co-Ordinator.

Ms Green, who hails from Cumbria and comes from a family committed to supporting the agricultural sector, is responsible for auditing the market data reports and leading on the development of the Market Prices platform, in her new role.

With a great awareness and passion for the industry, alongside a BSc honours degree and having recently gained a Level 5 in Leadership & Management, Ms Green’s skillsets are helping to develop and maximise the experience for users of the new Market Prices platform.

LAA Executive Secretary Mr Dodds comments, “This is a pivotal time for the British livestock industry, and indeed the LAA. We have consistently lobbied for, and robustly supported the industry, on behalf of our members and the rural communities they serve.

“I am delighted we have been able to significantly strengthen our executive team with the appointments of Alastair and Charlotte, and together we will work with our National Council and Next Generation Group to help support the longevity and succession of the LAA’s policy and strategic work, while continuing to deliver valuable services on behalf of our members, and the livestock production industry.”
